Don't Trade Clutter For Bugs: 4 Ways To Keep Pests Away From Your Dumpster

Posted on: 28 December 2016

With the new year just around the corner, it's time to start making your resolutions. If you've decided that this is the year to clear out from under all the clutter, it's a good idea to rent a dumpster. This is particularly important if you're going to be clearing out years of buildup. Renting a dumpster will allow you to clear away more of the clutter without taking up space in your curbside receptacles. If you're going to be renting a dumpster, it's important that you take precautions to keep the pests away. You don't want to clear away the clutter and be left with a new infestation of pests that were attracted to your dumpster. Here are four simple steps you can take to keep the pests away.

Seal the Bags

If you're going to be tossing household garbage in your dumpster, make sure the bags are sealed tightly. Food waste will attract bugs, which will result in a big problem for you. For maximum protection, it's a good idea to keep the household waste in your curbside receptacles. This will help keep the bugs under control.

Keep it Away From the House

Regardless of the type of trash that you're going to place in your dumpster, it's a good idea to place it as far away from your home as possible. Things like paper, cardboard boxes, and other debris can attract rodents, especially during the winter months. If you keep your dumpster near the outer perimeter of your yard, the rodents are less likely to find their way inside your home.

Don't Overfill the Dumpster

You might be tempted to fill your dumpster up as far as it will go. Unfortunately, overfilling can lead to pest problems, especially if the lid can't close. To keep the pests away, always ensure that the lid can close properly. It's also important that you keep the lid closed when not in use.

Dab on the Essential Oils

If you want to make sure that the pests stay away, but you don't want to spray pesticides in your yard, reach for the essential oils. Chrysanthemum and geranium oil will both work well to keep the pests away. Fill a spray bottle with water and add about 10 drops each of the essential oils. Apply the solution all around your dumpster to prevent infestation.
